| Freitag, 21.11.2008, 18:02 THC Classroom: Woodrow Wilson: American Idealist/Robert Goddard: Mr. Rocket Science - 06:00-07:00AM Born a minister's son in 1856, Woodrow Wilson was a history professor who became president. He pushed for the creation of the income tax and established the Federal Reserve System and Federal Trade Commission. When WWI could not be avoided, Wilson led the nation into battle to "make the world safe for democracy." Wilson's legacy is rooted in his determination to create a new world order from the devastation of WWI. In 1899, 17-year-old Robert Goddard had a mystical vision of space flight to other planets. He proved on paper that liquid fueled rockets could escape earth's gravity and fly through the vacuum of space, but it took years of painful trial and error to successfully launch a rocket. The Smithsonian Institution published his research and made him world famous. Goddard devoted his life to making his dreams come true and though he did not live to see men walk on the moon, his work made that possible. mehr... |

| Donnerstag, 20.11.2008, 18:33 THC Classroom: Bronislaw Malinowski: God Professor/Eastern Spirituality: The Road to Enlightenment - 06:00-07:00AM In 1915, Polish anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski journeyed to the South Pacific to study the people and culture of the Trobriand Islands. What he discovered there, and the techniques he developed, would change anthropology forever. Before Malinowski, most anthropologists did their research from afar, but Malinowski changed that by plunging directly into the communities and lives of the Trobriand people. He called this new method participant observation and it would become the gold standard of anthropological research. All religions seek to shed light on the meaning of life and the possibilities of an afterlife. Buddhism and Hinduism are the predominant faiths in the East. Buddhists do not have a Supreme Being at the center of their faith, while the Hindus acknowledge over three hundred million Gods and Goddesses. Eastern religions believe that humans are imperfect due to ignorance and desire. Enlightenment comes through actions and introspection. mehr... |

Patton's triumphs swept away the public's doubts about his erratic behavior and he was hailed as a conqueror. The 20th Century saw a revolution in how people got their news. Radio, newsreels and later television, Lowell Thomas mastered them all with a voice that carried both authority and folksy charm. He filmed and photographed Col. T.E. Lawrence and his Arab allies and introduced a new icon to the public: Lawrence of Arabia. | Freitag, 14.11.2008, 18:34 THC Classroom: French Foreign Legion/For the People Despite the People: Ataturk - 06:00-07:00AM In 1831, French King Louis Philippe faced two seemingly unrelated problems: overseas, his imperial ambitions were stymied by his subjects' reluctance to fight, while at home, France was besieged by a flood of refugees. The king solved both problems with one idea: the Foreign Legion. With the hope of citizenship, refugees then headed abroad to fight France's colonial wars. Reports portrayed the Legionnaires as mysterious men, for some it's a way to escape poverty. Today they serve as peacekeepers in global hotspots. From the ashes of the shattered Ottoman Empire, Mustafa Kemal created a new nation--Turkey. The world came to know him as Ataturk. In 1923, a treaty established the Republic of Turkey with Ataturk in charge. He redefined "Turk" as a national identity rather than an ethnic one, ordered Turks to wear western clothes, granted women the vote, and changed the nation's numbering and alphabet to the western system. mehr... |
