Zhang Qing (China)

Artistic Director of the 2006 Shanghai Biennale bearing responsibility for the scholarly theme and curatorial style of the Biennale.
Zhang Qing was born in Suzhou, China in 1964, and now lives in Shanghai. Currently he is Deputy Director of Shanghai Art Museum and Director of the Shanghai Biennale Office, member of CIMA, editor and curator of Art China . He has been a regular contributor to magazines including Art Monthly , Dushu , Avant-garde Today and Shanghai Culture since 1989, as well as editor-in-chief of the magazine Chinese Art of the 1990s .In 2000, he was named one of the "best curators in China" by CCTV. His main curatorial roles include Curator of the exhibition The Art of Yan Peiming (Shanghai,2005); Co-Curator for the 5th Shanghai Biennale(2004); Curator for Interpreting the Modern:The Collection Exhibition of Amsterdam Art Museum(Amsterdam,Shanghai,Singapore,2003);Junction:Architectural xperiments in Chinese Contemporary Art (Shanghai, 2003); Red China: Exhibition of Chinese Contemporary Art , (Gwangju, 2002); Co-Curator for City_Net Asia (Seoul, 2002); Curator for Cai Guoqiang (Shanghai, 2001); Curator for Expressions of Contemporary China (Singapore, 2001); and Co-Curator for the 3 rd Shanghai Biennale (2000).

Wonil Rhee (Korea)

Member of the 2006 Shanghai Biennale Curatorial Team

Specializing in media (ting) aesthetics and their interactions with the city. Wonil Rhee was born in Seoul, Korea in 1960, and continues to live there today. Currently he is Artistic Director of the 2006 Media_City Seoul Biennale. In 1995 he was named Chief Curator of the Total Museum of Art and Coordinator of the Korean Pavilion for the 1995 Venice Biennale. In 2000, he served as Director of the exhibition team for the Third Gwangju Biennale. From 1996 to 2002, he worked as Chief Curator at the Sung-Kok Museum of Art. In 2002, he was appointed Artistic Director of the Media_City Seoul Biennale, and in 2003 he became Chief Curator at the Seoul City Museum of Art. His major curatorial projects include: ElectroScape (Zendai MOCA, Shanghai, 2005); Co-Curator for Shanghai COOL (Duolun Museum of Art, Shanghai, 2005); Advisory Programmer to DMC (Seoul, 2004); Curator for Portrait-Landscape (Gwangju, 2005); Curator for the Asia-Oceania-Korea Section of the Gwangju Biennale (2004); Curator of the Asian Section at the Lodz Biennale (Poland, 2004); Curator for Digital Sublime (Taiwan, 2004); and Curator for City_Net Asia , (Seoul, 2003).

Huang Du (China)

Member of the 2006 Shanghai Biennale Curatorial Team concentrating on scholarly consideration of artistic theory. Huang Du (Ph.D.) was born in Lintong, China, in 1965. He now lives and works as a curator and art critic based in Beijing. He is an editor of Avant-garde Today . He worked as an editor for Meishu (Fine Arts) from 1988 to 2001. In 1997 he was the recipient of the "Art Prize from Munich's Lebnach-Hous Museum of Art. His major curatorial projects include: curator for Chinese Pavilion of the 26th Sao Paulo Biennale (Sao Paulo, 2004); Co-Curator for The 7th International Antique Biennale of Parma (Parma , 2004); Assistant Curator for Chinese Pavilion of the 50th Venice Biennale (2003); Contributing Curator for The 2nd Seoul International Media Art Biennale (Seoul, 2002); Curator of Making China (New York, 2002); Curator for Post Material: Interpretations of Everyday Life by Contemporary Chinese Artists (Beijing, 2000); Curator for The Chinese Pavilion of the 1st Melbourne International Biennial (Melbourne, 1999); Curator for Space and Vision: The Impression of Transmuting Daily Lives in Beijing (Beijing, 1998); and Co-Curator for Open Your Mouth , Close Your Eyes: Beijing-Berlin Art Communication (Beijing, 1995).

Jonathan Watkins (U.K.)

Member of the 2006 Shanghai Biennale Curatorial Team

Specializing in the expansion and penetration of art into daily life. Jonathan Watkins was born in Crawley, U.K. in 1957, and now lives in Birmingham. Currently he is Director of Ikon Gallery. Previously he was the Artistic Director of Eleventh Biennale of Sydney (1997-1998), Curator of Serpentine Gallery, London (1995-1997) and Director of Chisenhale Gallery, London (1990-1995). Independent group exhibitions include: Days Like These: Tate Triennial of Contemporary Art (Tate, London 2003); Facts of Life: Contemporary Japanese Art ( Hayward Gallery, London, 2001); and Quotidiana (Castello di Rivoli, 2000). Recent solo exhibitions include: Caro Niederer (with Kunstmuseum St Gallen, 2005); Ignasi Aballi , 0 - 24h (with MACBA, Barcelona and Museu Serralves Oporto, 2005); Ding Yi, Appearance of Crosses (2005); Giovanni Anselmo (with Kurhaus Museum Kleve, 2004); Georges Adeagbo , Le Socialism Africain (2004); Rirkrit Tiravanija , Demo Station (2003); Katharina Grosse , Koolpuppen (with Kunstmuseum St Gallen and Lenbachaus, Munich, 2002); On Kawara, Meditation. Shu-Min Lin (USA)

Member of the 2006 Shanghai Biennale Curatorial Team

Specializing in the manifestations of new and high-tech art in the contemporary art sphere. Shu-Min Lin was born in Taipei, Taiwan in 1963, now lives in New York. Teach at New York Institute of Technology as an assistant professor. Currently study Hypnotherapy as doctoral degree candidate. Previously he has also served on the Board of Directors for Art & Science Collaborations, Inc.,(1995), as consultant for Acer Digital Arts Center, as juror of Art Future Award, MoMaPS1 art radio station international correspondent(2004). He was also a featured artist in the Taiwan Pavilion at the Venice Biennale (2001), Shanghai Biennale (2004). He has also won several international art awards. including the Prize for Artistic Excellence of the International Biennial Open Competition and Exhibition of ARTEC '95 and ARTEC'97, Japan, and the Grand Prix of 10th Yugoslavia Biennial(2002). He was also The curator for the Taiwan Pavilion at the 50th Venice Biennale (2003), The curator for Climax-The Highlight of Ars Electronica (2005).. Curator for the Nankang Software Park II Public Art Project. Art and Science fistival(2006), and co -curator for Ars Electronica Fistival (2007).

Gianfranco Maraniello (Italy)

Member of the 2006 Shanghai Biennale Curatorial Team

Specializing in the sociology of art and the concrete praxis of aesthetic questions. Gianfranco Maraniello, born in Naples, Italy in 1971, now lives in Bologna. He is currently the Director of Galleria d'Arte Moderna and Museo Morandi in Bologna, and professor of new media aesthetics at the Art Institute of Milan. He was previously Curator at Palazzo delle Papesse-Centro Arte Contemporanea, Siena (2000-2001) and Curator at MACRO, Museo Arte Contemporanea Roma (2002-2005). He has been regular contributor for pubications such as BT (2000-2003), Parkett , and Flash Art (1993-2001). In 2003 he published European Art: The 1990s , and in 2005 he wrote for the book Art and Architecture . In 2006 he will publish a book on Asian contemporary art with a Japanese co-author. He has contributed to catalogues including Sonic Process (Centre Pompidou, Paris and MACBA, Barcelona, 2002) and Squatters (Museu Serralves Oporto, 2001). His major curatorial projects include: The Mediterraneans (Rome, 2004); Francesco Vezzoli/ Stalker, Christian Jankowski (Rome, 2003); Simon Starling (Rome, 2003); Napoli Anno Zero (Naples, 2002); Alessandra Tesi (Rome, 2002); Espresso: Art in Italy (Florence, 2001); The Gift: Generous Offerings, Threatening Hospitality (with Antonio Somaini; Siena, Venezia, and U.S.A. tour in collaboration with I.C.I., New York, 2001); Germany: The Construction of an Image (with B. Steiner; Siena, 2001).

Xiao Xiaolan (China)

Assistant Curator  specializing in how female perspectives inform the meanings of fashion. Xiao Xiaolan, born in Shanghai, China in 1956, now lives in Shanghai. 1998 - 2000 She traveled and visited in America and Canada also showed her art works there.Currently she is a Curator at Shanghai Art Museum and also an artist. She has written on female art and contemporary printmaking for publications including Shanghai Jiefang Daily, Shanghai Wenhui Daily, Shanghai Xinmin Evening News, Printmaking Art Magazine, Fine Arts of China and Fine Arts of Shanghai. Her main curatorial projects include: Curator for Zhu The Quen Recent Work ( Shanghai, 2005); Curator of The Wind From East Asia ( Shanghai, Korea, Japan, 2005 ); Curator of Hong Kong Artist Ha Bik- Chuen ( Shanghai,2004 ); Curator for Space: Installation Art by Hong Kong Artist Kin-wah Tsang ( Shanghai, 2004 ); Curator of Art Interaction: 2004 Female Art ( Shanghai, 2004 ); Curator for French Impressionism ( Shanghai, 2004 ); Co-Curator for Beyond Paradise - Nordic Artists Travel East ( Shanghai, 2003 ); Co- Curator for French New Realism Art ( Shanghai, 2003 ); Curator of America Pop Artist Robert Indiana ( Shanghai, 2002 ); Co- Curator of 1945 - 2000 Italy Design ( Shanghai, 2001 ).
