The Elbe Philharmonic Concert Hall in Hamburg

A vision from Arndt Tomás

While the new concert hall in Hamburg, the Elbe Philharmonic concert hall, was being planned I was fascinated by it in many ways. When the foundation stone was laid I decided to create a drawing to present my vision of the building and its importance for the second biggest city in Germany.

With permission from the project architects Herzog & Meuron I am the first artist that is involved. The planning includes two parts of the Elbe Philharmonic: The existing foundation of an old coffee warehouse from the 60s called Kaispeicher and the upper "wave of cristal" shall be designed on top of it like a sail to welcome entering ships in the harbor of Hamburg.

The brick base part symbolizes the Hamburg traditional values such as trade and harbour. The glass façade built upon it mirrors the sky and stands for the diversity of Hamburg music life. The building combines tradition and modernity and is trendsetting for Hamburg's future. The topping-out ceremony is scheduled for early 2008, the opening for 2010.

HAMBURG, Germany, May 2007

Hamburg just laid the foundation stone for the new Elbe Philharmonic concert hall, a spectacular glass-fronted structure that will tower over the city's harbour and southern city. Arndt Tomás as the first artist has drawn his vision of the new symbol of Hamburg. On his website http://worldpaintings.eu/en/thomas he presents the first oil paintings drawn from different perspectives.

Built on top of an old coffee warehouse from the 1960s, the futuristic new complex located at the end of southern Hamburg right beside the river Elbe will welcome entering ships in the second biggest harbour of Europe. Based on plans by the well known Swiss architects Herzog & Meuron the approximately 250 million Euro ($330) building is planned to be completed in the beginning of 2010. The building will be 360 feet tall.

Supporters of the new building have announced that the Elbe Philharmonic concert hall will take a place among the world's 10 best concert halls. City mayor Ole von Beust said he expects it to raise the profile of Germany's prosperous second-biggest city. Hamburg will therefore develop its image from a big city to a metropolis that will be well known in the world.
