Video Installation

Introduction

Inner Force   series is an interactive video installation that formulates the inner status of Chinese martial art through technology application to construct a virtual space capable of reflecting subtle changes in human brains. The real-time interactive installation could project the interrelationship of sub-consciousness between human being. The instability of the detected index symbolizes the common condition of life, and the mutual situation between two people is produced in interactive reflection.   Inner Force I  adapts the Taoist thinking of "Wu Wei", so does it show a relaxed and non desiring mind could be filled more. In the opposite, Inner Force II  relies on the speed of wills to form images. Resulting from the great speed of thinking, the image would go blank by the end.

This series also technically goes beyond the current era of hand computing mode, and steps into the next trend of brain computing. Inner Force represents this innovation improvement of our time via interactive art installation.

Concept

Followed the Inner  Force I,   this new series also reads the brainwave index of participants with electroencephalogram (EEG) to activate the interaction. The first series adapts the brainwave a index, and the second series the brainwave β. The brainwave a index would climb up when the participant gets calmer, and the β index represented the brain exercise status would get stronger when there are more emotion or thinking going on in the brain. Brainwave β which indicates the speed of thinking would be detected by the EEG and process the spinning of the images.

Form of Interaction

Equipped with the EEG sensors on participants' foreheads, the ground wire to their necks, their brainwave β activity will be analyzed in real-time by the computer to activate the interactive images.

Display

The image will be projected onto four pieces of electric glass, which appeal as common transparent glass when it is disconnected to electricity, and as sanded glass as connected to electricity for projection effect. These four pieces of electric glass are arranged into a cross (like a fan), so that the projection effect could show revolving lightness on them. The appearance of image and its spinning speed are decided by the brainwave β of two participants. However, two participants would perceive different visuals due to their position.

Space

The seats for participating audience are made of plastic whose uncomfortable prickly surface would stimulate the audience to run their wills. The organic glass box under the prickly cushion would light up the room in red to show the tension.

Visual Contents

The Demonstrations below could be customized for exhibitions.

A-1 Time Compression

  • Based on a documentary film, the film would be rewound from color to black-and-white.
  • Based on a documentary film, the film would be rewound from color to black-and-white.
  • The same scene gradually turns from color to black-and-white.
  • The film plays in counter-clockwise direction on the glass.
  • The revolving movement goes faster and faster until the image turns into blankness.
  • The electric glass becomes transparent again.

A-2 Deconstruction

  • 1. The blurring image comes to a focus.
  • 2. It shows a lotus blossoming, and the petals spin clockwise.
  • 3. The spinning speed exceeds until the image turns into blankness.
  • 4. The electric glass turns transparent again.

A-3 Substantial presence status change

  • 1. The blurring image comes to a focus, showing a sward.
  • 2. The sward begins to transform and becomes melted.
  • 3. Continue to be melted.
  • 4. The image turns to show fire.
  • 5. Fire flies and spines around on glass.
  • 5.1. The spinning speed exceeds until the image turns into blankness.
  • 5.2. The spinning speed exceeds until the image turns into blankness.

A- 4 Morphing effect turns the precious into stone.

  • 1. The blurring image comes to a focus, showing a historical precious object.
  • 2. The precious object is morphed into another valuable object.
  • 3. The changing of object runs faster and faster.
  • 4. The valuable objects gradually turn into stone.
  • 5. The stone bursts into pieces that fly around in the air.
  • 6. The spinning speed exceeds until the image turns into blankness.
  • 7. The electric glass turns transparent again

A-5 Time reverse

  • 1. The blurring image comes to a focus, showing a face of an old person.
  • 2. The face of the elderly reverses into its younger look.
  • 3. The image finally shows a baby's face.
  • 4. The spinning speed exceeds until the image turns into blankness.
  • 5. The electric glass turns transparent again.

Sound Effect

Once the participant A puts on the EEG, a drumming sound will be produced according to the strength of the detected brainwave β. The higher the index is, the higher and quicker the drumming volume is.

Once the participant B puts on the EEG, a sound of Guzheng will be produced according to the strength of the detected brainwave β. The higher the index is, the higher and quicker the music volume is.
