James Simon

Philanthropist and Patron of the Arts

Benefactor, Patriot and Jewish Cosmopolitan

One of the most important art patrons of his time, James Simon donated nearly one thousand works of art to the National Museums of Berlin, including the famed bust of Nefertiti. Now for the first time the complete collection of works bequeathed by Simon is presented in book form. Arranged by museum, these pieces comprise Egyptian artifacts, master paintings, objects from Asia, Europe, and the Byzantine Empire, as well as prints, drawings, and rare coins. Contributions from the museums' directors reveal how these works serve Simon's efforts to preserve cultural values and tradition as well as reflect his own integrity and tremendous humanitarianism.

Berlin's museums would only be half as attractive without the patron and philanthropist James Simon. As philanthropist he supported more than sixty organisations, including summer camps and girls' leagues. This publication honors these cultural and public services.

Setting out to explore the life of James Simon ...

The countenance he presented to the world is known by all. Nefertiti's image was buried deep in Egyptian sand for almost three and a half thousand years before exposed once again to the light of day in 1912. She entered the twentieth century in a triumphal march which would forever impress her features into the visual memory of an entire world. But the man who rendered this possible has remained obscure to almost everyone, with the mention of his name drawing blanks from even the culturally interested. The man doomed to oblivion, James Simon 81851-1932), is perhaps the greatest patron Berlin has ever seen.

His social commitment, of no less importance, is the other aspect of a life dedicated to the public welfare and should not be forgotten. He founded the first public swimming pool, supported the public education of the lower classes and aided the socially disadvantaged.

After setting out to explore the life of James Simon, it is impossible to escape the awe his figure inspires, for he was extraordinary in his intellectual wealth and exemplary humanity. His life and work still radiate a glow which should enthuse future generations for the cause of the public good and support of the fine arts.

The editor, Bernd Schultz, suggested this volume to honor the memory of James Simon.
