”Born in Santa Margherita Ligure, Italy, in 1930, since 1954
Gianni Berengo Gardin was involved in photography. His favorite
fields are social issues, architectural and urban reports,
landscapes and people.
From 1954 to 1965, works for Il Mondo, a famous weekly magazine
directed by Mario Pannunzio.
All along the years, he works with the major magazines and
newspapers in Italy and abroad (i.e., Domus, Epoca, L'Espresso,
Time, Stern, Harper's, Réalités, Vogue, le Figaro, etc.).
His peculiar photographic view has always been very welcomed
also in advertising and corporate. Several of the most
impressive pictures used in the adv. campaigns and corporate
communications came from his archive: the Olivetti and the
Italian branch of Procter and Gamble reportages, among
others.
More than 50 different exhibitions, all over the world, have
celebrated his work and his creativity: the New York Museum of
Modern Art, the Rochester Eastman House, and the Bibliothèque
Nationale of Paris....
In 1990, Gianni Berengo Gardin has also been special guest to
the Mois de la Photo of Paris and a special exhibition has been
held in FNAC galleries. His big Retrospective was hosted in the
Lausanne Musée de l'Elysée in 1991 and his pictures were
included in the big exhibition dedicated to Italian Art in 1994
(New York Guggenheim Museum).
In Arles, during the 1995 Rencontres Internationales De la
Photographie the Oskar Barnack - Camara Group award, awarded
him.
Gianni Berengo Gardin has published around 150 photographic
books. Among others, Venise des Saisons, Viaggio in Toscana,
L'occhio come mestiere, Toscana, Sardegna, Grecia, Francia,
Immagine di Venezia, Dentro le Case, Donne, Gran Bretagna, Il
Mondo di Pannunzio, his big Retrospective book, In treno
attraverso l'Italia (with Ferdinando Scianna and Roberto Koch),
Storyboard - reportage dedicated to the Italian branch of
Procter and Gamble. His last works were dedicated to Gypsies
communities in Italy (the book Disperata Allegria. Vivere da
Zingari a Firenze won the Barnack award in 1994) and to the
Italians (see the book Italiani, Fedrico Motta Editore,
1999).
Gianni Berengo Gardin used to live in Paris, Switzerland, Rome
and Venice and then he set up in Milan. Contrasto represents
his work worldwide.”
